Greatness of God

If you don’t see the greatness of God then all the things that money can buy become very exciting. If you can’t see the sun you will be impressed with a street light. If you’ve never felt thunder and lightning you’ll be impressed with fireworks. And if you turn your back on the greatness and majesty of God you’ll fall in love with a world of shadows and short-lived pleasures.

A terrifying and beautiful thought

One of the most terrifying things about life is that you can become almost anything you set your mind and heart to. I use the word terrifying not as a negative, but it demonstrates the feeling of having boundless possibilities before you.

If you were to look back 3 years ago, you may have imagined yourself at the very spot you are in now or the complete opposite has happened and life is very different from what you've imagined. Regardless, this shows that as we progress we become whatever our wills push us to become and nothing else.

And if you think about the next 3 years of your life, you are greeted with a galaxy wide span of options. Anything can happen. The thought of life becomes more than simply goals, doing, and breathing. It's like standing on a high plateau looking at the great sky in front of you trying to take in all that in ahead of you, marveling at the vastness and beauty of it all.

With each day,  you are met with a countless number of possibilities. Your life at any given moment can go in any direction. You may start the day feeling so very single, and by the end of it you have a date. You could be bored at your desk and within the hour you get a call that a loved one has been in an accident. If you consider how many curves, twists, and opportunities life can toss at you you begin to see that the creation of who you become is something of a wonder.

This is why you should never think of your life as unchangeable. Things are altering around you without your permission, but when you become an active participant in your own life what you can make of it is astounding. With the help of God all things are possible, but you must be fully engaged in your own life. You may be working towards something you've always wanted, or maybe you don't know where you're going, perhaps things are finally looking up--as long as you always keep faith and give your own life a chance, you'll find life will give you something worth waking up for.

When my times feels most valuable

I wanted to make buttermilk pancakes this morning. Correction, I wanted to eat buttermilk pancakes. I wasn't bursting with enthusiasm to make them. Isn't that how it is sometimes? You want something, but you don't actually want to work for it.

For instance, I want a million dollars, but I'm kind of just hoping I'll go to the bank and there it'll be without my having to do anything. Or how I really want to spend a summer in a luxury apartment in France, but do I want to work my tail off to earn enough to go to France...nope. But life doesn't work like that. You have to do something to get something.

If I want a boat load of money, I have to be willing to do two boat loads of work to get it. Sometimes it's all worth it. You work hard and feel proud once you've achieved the end reward. Sometimes it's not worth it, but in those cases at least you can say you put in your best effort. At least you tried.

Most of what we do is trival. It doesn't mean all that much in the grand scheme of things. I mean, me making pancakes is not going to help the world much (not unless I'm sharing). Even the hours spent working is done to stuff something in between the slots of time I've been alotted. It helps me contribute, but I'm not doing anything incredible simply by working.

The only real time I feel the time and energy I'm giving is doubled (trippled), and I really feel it is valuable is when I'm spending time with God. To the outside viewer, I'm not doing much in those moments. I'm not rushing around; I'm not trying to please everyone in sight; I'm not conquring the world, but in those moments I am doing the very best thing I can do for the world. I'm opening my heart; I'm letting him in; I'm boosting my self worth and yet humbling myself. I'm filling myself with joy, releasing my fear and sorrow, I'm conquring my demons, and I am connecting with everything he has put on this planet. All this lets me do whatever it is I'm expected to do with renewed excitment. It gives me courage to face the things I couldn't otherwise. It keeps me hopeful, joyful, grateful.

God gives me more than the world will ever give me. No matter how hard I work, the reward will never match up. And there is no possible way I can ever give to the world all that God has already given it. So while I do my trival work on earth, I remind myself to work even harder for God. Not because it will change the world, or even send me to heaven (it might not) but as a way to say thanks for all the times I didn't do anything but was still blessed by him.

My non religious friends vs my religious ones

Majority of my friends are either non religious or of a different faith. It doesn't bother me. I see them for their talents, their support and the many ways they add to my life. But there is a difference between my non religious friends and my religious ones. My non religious friends talk about religion a whole lot more.

I always find it amusing when someone who has made it a point to not believe in any type of God, or follow any kind of religion, wants to discuss religion. But then people generally love talking about what they know nothing about. These discussions aren't sourced in curiosity, where they simply want to learn more about me and my life; they are rooted in a determination to prove that there isn't a God.

Besides this blog, I make it a point to never dicuss religion. It's too touchy of a subject. No one can fully understand why a person belongs to a specific religion or chooses not to believe at all. And those from the same religion always have different viewpoints about the "right" way to practice. So as a personal rule, religion is not something I bring to the table for conversation.

But my non religious friends greatly enjoy talking about it. They can sit for at least half and hour discussing God and why there isn't one and how religion is destroying mankind. I usually remain quiet, and let them repeat over used phrases that most non religious people use when they discuss religion, without joining in on the debate. There isn't anyway I can prove how much I love God to them, and to me our being on this planet is proof enough that there is a God, so arguing furiously the way they do is pointless to me.

However, one day I had had enough. Not only did I find it odd that people who claimed not to believe in God were saying his name like they were close friends with him, but I was tired of the unmasked insult of being foolish for believeing in something "unseen."

When a guy I knew mentioned how he hated people pushing religion on him and the world would be a better place if religion didn't exist I replied:

"I agree that no one should force you to believe in something you don't, but you have no right to persuade someone to not believe in something. To you God is a manmade thing causing havoc, but to many it is the sole reason they even get out of bed in the morning. God is hope for many. He is what they have when all else is gone. Having him, and being able to practice worship, makes them happy and feel a sense of peace. If you don't believe what difference does it make if someone tells you you'll burn in hell. You don't believe in hell; you don't believe in God so the words hold no weight, but to sit there and make someone feel stupid for believeing in perhaps the one thing that gives them strengh is a big deal, because you at least have learned to live without religion; how do you plan to replace God for someone who has known him and was turned away. How do you plan to give someone back their source of strength, hope and faith once you have destoryed it?"

He was quiet and has not brought up religion in my presence again. The point is, regardless of what you believe you have no right to shun, mock, or be insulting towards what another person believes.

A Stylish Soul

When I shop it isn't to be an icon of beauty, or wow passer byers. I simply don't care about a lot of worldly goods other people do. I like simplicity. I'm more found of sun sets than gem stones.

I live in the world, yes. I go out and do what other girls do. I like things, looking at things, buying things, but I don't seek a deep connection with these things.

I don't want to be first in line for any gadget. I don't feel like a better person if people approve of the stuff I own. It's just stuff. My clothes, shoes, bag are just stuff. I'm starting to feel like I have too much stuff.

Yet I keep shopping.

What is the reason for this? It's what humans do I guess. But it's not what spirits do.

It's the spirit part of me that I value the most. That is what I want to look good. If I am too be really beautiful, truly stylish, then I should think more of the spirit than the body.

The spirit isn't dressed in fine jewels, but fine feelings such as peace, love and humility. The spirit doesn't seek out the latest trends, but instead the balance and oneness felt by giving yourself to everything beyond earthly desire.

I don't value my skirts; they don't bring peace or joy. I value my soul. I value God. I value what no shop on earth can sell  me.

We are wind and shadow

Every living man is no more than a puff of wind, no more than a shadow. All he does is for nothing. He gathers wealth but does not know who will get it.
What then can I hope for, LORD? I put my hope in you.

------

Humble Trust

I work to give up my pride and turn away from my arrogance. I am not concerned with great matters. Instead, I am content and at peace. As a child lies quietly in its parents arms, so my heart is quiet within me. I will trust in the LORD, now and forever.

Prayer of Praise

To him who is able to keep you from falling, and to bring you faultless and joyful before his presence--to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be Glory, majesty, might and authority, from all ages past, and now, and forever and ever!

Marry me to the moon

Marry me to the moon; marry me to the stars

Marry me to the canyons, the meadows, and the shores of the sea

Marry me to the dusks of Autumn and the rains of Spring

Marry me to lavas; marry to the streams

Marry me to earthen rocks and prairie hills

Marry me to the songs of the larks, and the cry of whales

Marry me to morning dew; marry me to rustling leaves

Marry me to the twinkle of smiling eyes, and the blushing of cheeks

Marry me to laughter; marry me to smiles

Marry me to the crashing waves, daisy fields, and hollow trees

Marry me to swaying branches, marry me to rays of sun

Marry me to strength, joy, miracles and hope

Marry me to what is enduring and so obviously a creation of God

Why Christians Struggle

“This is why so many Christians struggle to live as the light of Christ on the world—we aren’t plugged into our power source. Although God called us to be lights in the darkness, we fail so often because we are unplugged and trying to shine in our own power.”

Awake and Alive

My garden captivated my imagination. Not for the grass and trees, but for the examination of life. Something great made the trees; the flowers; the blades of grass. Something breathed life into all that stood in my garden that day, including me. And this same something breathed love into each creation, because it so apparent that I wasn't just looking at a product. There was an energy so powerful in each creation in my garden that all I could do was marvel.

I've seen my garden many times, admired the flowers and greenery, but it was perhaps the first time that I was seeing more than just a pretty flower. There is something so profound, so energized with love that no one can begin to understand it. All we can do is cherish it and be grateful for it.

My hand bag, though I think it is pretty, is not part of this great web of life. Admiring it is not the same as the admiring the creations of God. It breaths no life; it offers no love. The day made me want to choose carefully where I gave my worship. I want my attention to be maximized on all that is made by and centered on the astounding, un-replicable love of God.

The Greatest Artist

      God is the greatest artist
To whom no one can compare,
Streaking sunsets very beautiful,
Painting rainbows in the air.

Brushing green the hillside scene,
Blotting blue the sky above,
Splashing flowers 'cross the ground beneath,
Shading white clouds with His glove.

Of the wonders God has made
There is none that is so fair
As the smile He paints upon your face
When you realize He's there.

Would you trade your life

Did you ever want to sell you your life perhaps on eBay or something and bid on a new one? I’ve entertained this notion once or twice.

Of course it’s preposterous because the grass is never greener on the other side. Not without work. And I’m not sure I could handle the work that goes into making somebody else’s grass greener. I can, for the most part, handle the challenges in my life but I’m not sure I could live another person’s life adequately. I might end up killing their garden completely.
But the idea of a different life still comes to me sometimes. Not necessarily my entire life, but bits and pieces of it.

Stuff I don’t find works for me, but would do quite nicely for someone else. For example, I’m very thin and though I have no problems with my weight I do have issues with my health. Now someone might be happy to trade their perfect health for a tiny body.

Or perhaps someone would be more than glad to trade their house at the beach side for a position at some fashion magazine, who knows what people secretly desire.

But imagine if you could give something away, something you don’t truly value, or find bothersome in exchange for something you desperately long for.

When I get this silly notion of wanting a different life in my head I remind myself only some of my life is given to me by God (my body, my mind, family etc) the rest are things I put there or allowed myself to be exposed to. Before I start criticizing any part of my life, I need to remember that a lot of it is what I made; all the things in it I wanted at some point in time. And should it no longer be of use to, I have the option of letting it go or altering it so it does.

Thus at any given time, my life has the potential to be as good as I want it to be, with the help of God.

Warm my head and warm my heart

The sun shone as brightly as my yellow toque the day I took this picture. Spring had settled and there wasn’t an icicle in sight. But still I felt cold. A chill crossed upon me: uninvited, and unfitting of the cheery yellow that shone through the window.

There are days when the sun itself cannot fill me. Its heat does not penetrate. On those days when I need more, I turn to the one who controls the rays. I put on my cap of sunny yellow and pray a prayer for your warmth oh Lord. Only you can warm my heart and set a fire in my soul large enough to keep the winters of life at bay.

I tried many things that day to sustain the warmth, attempting one substitute after the other: hats, sweaters, blankets and warm delicious stew made by my hands thinking it would lock in the heat. But there was nothing that could truly suffice. Nothing could take your place and embody your love.

A hat on my head for days of chill, a belly of stew for evenings of cold hunger, and the Lord in my heart for an eternity of warmth.

A prayer for help

How much longer will you forget me, LORD? Forever?
How much longer must I endure trouble?
How long will sorrow fill my heart night day and night?
How long will my enemies triumph over me?

Look at me, O LORD, and answer me.
Restore my strength; don't let me die.
Don't let my enemies say, "We have defeated him."
Don't let them gloat over my downfall.

I rely on your constant love
I will be glad because you will rescue me.
I will sing to you O LORD, because you have been good to me.

How to stop worrying about the future

I hate worrying about the future. I'm not even sure why I do it when the Lord has already taken care of it. It is a fruitless act to worry. It brings no satisfaction, no ease of mind, it simply drains and pulls one away from success and fulfillment. You cannot do well when you are so busy worrying about doing well. And yet I do it. I worry about my health, will I be well enough to realize my dreams. I worry about falling in love or rather, someone not falling in love with me. I worry about my academic career, will I get good grades and get a good job.
These things run through my mind. I over contemplate. This is actually called furturizing. We all do it on some level, because we are taught from a young age to plan for the future and think ahead. And in some respects it's necessary to think ahead. But it can be done to an excessive point and it can lead to a chronically stressful life when planning becomes chronic stressing about the future. Physical consequences such as loss of sleep, loss of appetite, weariness, and even physical pain can result from this stressing.

So how do we stop this worrying about the future?

By living in the moment.

It seems easier said than done doesn't it. I mean how does one put themselves in the present when there is so much to plan for?

By appreciating the here and now that God has given you. By savoring the little moments you enjoy and by placing your fears of the future in the Lord.

You have no control over your tomorrow as much as you would like to. But you do have control over your today, so focus on that. Focus on what you are doing now. Do it with all your ability. Enjoy and love the present blessings and even challenges you receive because they will shape your future. What you do today will be reflected in your tomorrow. So if you are worrying about the what if's of your future, think and examine how you are living in this very moment.

Trust your life in the Lord, appreciate the present, and release control over your tomorrow.

God Bless

Seeking Approval

All of us want to be liked. We want to be admired and have the support of others, especially those close to us. So when we learn that someone might not share the same enthusiasm about something important to us, we can’t help but to take it personally and in some cases feel insulted. For example, you’ve finally decided what you want to do with your life but your family is less than thrilled with your decision, or perhaps you’ve experienced the harsh feeling that comes with introducing someone your friends and family dislike.

I myself, have sought the approval of others and with that often comes the need to feel validated, to feel reassured that I’m still a person of valuable and worthy opinions and ideas. And it is this quest for validation after feeling dejected that often gets one into trouble. Is there a way to make people approve of you and your ideas? Perhaps not, but there are ways to soften the harsh blow of disapproval, and reduce the need to seek validation.

 1. Don’t share until you’re ready. A fellow marketing friend of mine once told me “don’t share any business idea, until you have a strong foundation.” I’ve always believed this and hearing him say it helped me to confirm it. When you share an ill constructed idea, it gives people ample opportunity to find the holes in it until they’ve torn it apart, leaving you feeling hollow. It’s not that people want you to fail, but they do like pointing out that it’s a possibility. But my friend wasn’t just talking about the idea itself, but also my confidence in it. Whether it’s a new relationship, career choice, even a new outfit, it’s much easier to take the critique when you have built a strong confidence in it. You’ll feel less bruised when you’ve padded yourself with an armor of self esteem and confidence. Therefore, wait until your idea and your belief in it is solid before seeking approval.

2. Do it for the right reasons. We often make decisions for the same reason we seek approval on these decisions, vanity. Have you ever done something thinking, “Everybody will like this?”  Well, when it turns out that every body doesn’t like it it hurts a lot more than if you simply did it for yourself. If you’ve ever dated someone just because you thought the world would approve of him, took a job that looked great to societal standards, or even changed yourself in anyway just to get more attention you unfortunately heard, and answered, vanity’s call. The real trouble with this is if the motive is wrong then it’s harder to prove the decision is right. Any decision you make should have pure intentions. You should be doing it from your heart and without the intention of praise. If people like it great;. if not, who cares, you do!

3. It’s not you, it’s them. Everything we do in life is subjective. Everything. Therefore, if someone disapproves of something you’re doing understand that they are looking at it from the angle of their own lives. They aren’t simply thinking “is that the best thing for you to be doing,” but rather “would I do that.” If a person is showing strong opposition to a decision you’ve made, it often just means what you’re doing wouldn’t work for them or make them happy, so don’t let it eat you away. Forgive and be grateful for the fact that everyone has different definitions of happiness.

4. Try to be a little objective. When we get criticized, most of us immediately feel hurt and try to defend ourselves. But what if there is some truth to what they are saying. Perhaps it’s not the best time to be doing that particular thing, or maybe there’s something about that guy that your friends see that you don’t. Criticism can often save a lot of time and heartache, if we try and be objective with it. If someone disapproves of a decision you’ve made try looking at it from their perspective. What are they seeing that you’re not?

We can’t make everyone agree with us all the time, and we not might always get the support we need from those close to us, but if you are doing something with pure intentions God is on your side and is already blessing the decision.

A spoon full of love

My photoshop editor likes to go to war with me. It disobeys and plays tricks even when I'm looking. So I have to apologize for the way the edit looks.
I took this pic of cinnamon hearts, one of my favorite treats, and thought of the quote after I saw the picture.

I was thinking, I wish there was a big bowl of love that I could go to when I felt down, misunderstood, or depleted. Then I realized there is! I can't always rely on my friends or family, though I do love them, and self doubt can make it hard to always like myself, but God, no matter what, loves me. He is that big fountain of love that endlessly pours out. All I have to do is go to him. It's not a long journey. No matter where I am, I can always spoon out a little love.
Believe that you are loved, that this world still has love at its center, and that you are worth every bit of love you receive.

Confessing and Rejecting Christ

If anyone declares publicly that he belongs to me, I will do the same for him before my father in heaven. But if anyone rejects me publicly, I will reject him before my Father in heaven.

Luke 12.8-9
